Pint Sized Adventure: Snow Painting
By Tammie Thompson
Day six of one big Pacific snowstorm: Kids tired of sledding through thick snow. Kids tired of building snowmen. Kids tired of power outages. Kids tired. Mom tired too. What to do?
Sno-Paint to the rescue! Who would have thought that color in a bottle could create such a diversion? Tired kids perked up and faced the challenge: best-painted snow sculpture wins a prize!
My kids rallied the neighborhood kids. Each bundled artist headed out with a bottle of Sno-Paint to create a masterpiece. The simple canvas of snow became a fusion of color, shape and giggles. Bright colors, mixed to form new colors, created names and signs. Snowmen became jolly with bits of color. One boy even created a giant birthday greeting for his mom: Happy Birthday Mom in pink and purple.
The winning team created a color washed snow fort. Complete with igloo style walls and a stash of colored pre-made snowballs, the fort kept the clan active all day. They enjoyed some hot chocolate, added blankets and invited the resident dog for a visit.
Boxed sets of Sno-Paint come with various colored powder, cute snowman spray bottles and a couple of extra plastic bottles for mixing. It's simple to set up: mix powder into snowman bottle, add hot water, and go. The liquid sprays out thick, with a bit of a gel base. It is biodegradable and non-toxic - which is good as the dog ate the colored snow. It also washes out of clothing and washes away after the snow melts.
Retail prices for the kits:
Sno-Paint 2-bottle kit: $8.00 includes 2 bottles, 1 sprayer, 1 cap, 4 colors
Sno-Paint 4 bottle kit: $16.00 includes 4 bottles, 2 sprayers, 2 caps, 8 colors
Refills with 4 color packs are $4.00
The colored sculptures adorned our yard for a couple of weeks (what the dog didn't get into) and the kids moved on to other diversions. But I'm sold on the Sno-Paint products. We had tried food coloring and water, but found it stained hands as well as snow clothes. Sno-Paint put out a much brighter color and washed up easily. It was a bit hard to get out of the snowman bottles once it set up - but a little soaking in hot water took care of that.
