Make it Fun! Tips to having fun on the slopes with the kids.
By T.

The best way to ensure success on the slopes is for your child to have an exhilarating
experience. Fun, that's the name of the game. Here are some tips to make your
life easier and get those giggles going.
- If this is your first time, explain to your child what to expect. The SnowMonster video is helpful.
- Weather-proof all outerwear before you go. Try TechWash (NIKWAX) or ScotchGuard
- Check your equipment for breakage, gouges, broken straps, etc., before you go.
- Write your child's name
on all clothing and equipment. Use masking tape or indelible pen (Rub a Dub).
- Give yourself plenty
of time to get to the mountain. Stress can kill the experience before it starts.
- Pack up the night before
- even if you are lodging slopeside. Then you just jump in your rig without thinking.
-
Keep a backpack packed with extra mittens, headband, tissues, lip balm, sunscreen,
quarters, long
underwear
and snacks. Think no-brainer when you need it.
- Pack the kid's pockets:
change for the phone (not the candy machine); phone number on piece of paper;
Granola Bar, Power Bar or the favorite Tiger's Milk Bar for energy; small tube
of sunscreen (apply liberally before you head out, or look for the kind on a string
to hang around the neck); and lip balm.
- Get to the mountain by
8:00 if possible. That will give you time to get tickets, sign up for ski school
and even grab an extra breakfast snack.
- Some folks get there
at 7:30 and eat breakfast on the mountain.
- If you enroll the kids
in ski school - stay away. Watch from a distance if you must. Kids get distracted
when confronted with family and may forget they are having fun. Save the photo
session for after class.
-
Check chalkboards at lifts for messages or ask about a beeper or radio for emergencies.
- If you ski or board with
your child be sure to take lots of potty and snack breaks. Enter the land of imagination.
Pretend you are a fighter plane, a Hot Wheels car, a bird in flight, whatever
gets their imagination going and gets them down the hill. Go through the trees,
look for jumps and conjure up images of explorers on a mission. - Have fun!!!!
That means you too. There is nothing better than sitting around apres ski reliving
those epic moments.
