Junior Ski and Snowboard Instructor Programs
“Get a Job!”
BY Tammie Thompson
Is your teen an awesome skier or snowboarder? Are you getting a bit nervous about them just hanging out at the mountain without purpose or supervision? Think about getting them signed up for a Junior or Teen Instructor program. Programs vary by resort, but many offer training camps or sessions with the opportunity for teens to get a winter job at the resort.
Following are some programs, but be sure to inquire at both the ski school and the race team to see about junior programs. Many race teams need "backdoor" coaches who will follow at the back of the group, picking up the little guys and keeping everyone accounted for. Many ski schools have apprentice program or junior programs that lead to PSIA or AASI certification and a potential full time job in the future.
There are a few programs that are available in the summer (Europe, New Zealand); but most start late fall. Following is some info that came from each resort’s website. Interested families should contact the resort directly for more information and exact dates of the program.
Ski Academy Switzerland Company:
The PSIA Summer Program has been designed for potential ski instructors to train and qualify with Ski Academy Switzerland. Completion of your PSIA course will enable you to work for the winter 2009/10 season as a ski instructor in our partnered Ski Schools across Europe or the USA.
Over the 4 week course the SAS coaches will work on your personal skiing, allowing you to gain skills in steeps, bumps and piste performance. We will focus on each individual student covering every aspect of skiing including video analysis, providing a constant personal development ski and teaching program for the duration of the course. During the course we will have various ski school directors from Europe (Verbier, Gstaad, Mount Snow, Killington to name just a few!) and USA conducting informal interviews for possible ski instructor positions within their ski schools.
New Zealand – This Summer!
The Cardrona Instructor Training Centre has enjoyed training aspiring ski and snowboard instructors for over a decade.

You can choose a ski or snowboard instructor training program to suit your timeframe and budget; either as a gap year option, or as a launchpad into a career in snowsports instruction.
