Educational Alternatives for Athletic Kids
K¹² Offers Options for Athletes on the Move
K¹² gets kids thinking big.
Like understanding the science behind a tennis player's overhand smash. Or appreciating the pure poetry in motion of a figure skater's double-axel.
That’s thanks to K¹² and their award-winning curriculum, individualized to bring learning alive—be it science, language arts, and more—one child at a time. Every subject is delivered online, with hands-on experiments, plus books and support from expert teachers.
When kids get into learning, learning gets into them.
K¹² is America’s largest online curriculum provider for grades K through 12. Because they give every student a chance to think big.
Options include:
• Part-time or full-time
• Tuition-free public schooling in many states
• An accredited online private school available nationwide
• Over 150 individual courses, including foreign languages, AP® and electives available for direct purchase
An exceptional, portable education—the perfect match for young athletes on the go.
Competitive young athletes, no matter what their sport, can benefit from the balanced, completely portable education K¹² offers.
Chelsea Christopher—Figure Skater
For Chelsea Christopher, a 14-year-old competitive figure skater with her eye on the 2010 Winter Olympics, waking up at five a.m., skating for four hours, attending high school online for another five, and then catching up with friends is all in a day's work.
By the time Chelsea was entering fourth grade, this Ohio native's talent had her parents exploring education options that would enable her to pursue her dreams on the ice while receiving a proper education off it. Five years ago, the Christophers enrolled Chelsea in the Ohio Virtual Academy—an online public school that uses the K¹² curriculum. Now a high school freshman there, Chelsea says: "Learning with K¹² and the Ohio Virtual Academy is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I skate in the morning, go to school in the afternoon, then have the night to myself."
Cassie Whitcomb—Gymnast
Fifteen-year-old Cassie Whitcomb leaps high into the air. Twisting her body to arc backwards, she somersaults head over heels, not once, not twice, but three times—finally landing on her feet with perfect poise and a sweet smile. Just watching Cassie can take your breath away. So can listening to this young teen describe her daily routine. Up at five a.m. and going strong until around nine p.m., Cassie's hours are almost evenly divided between gymnastics and school.
Recognizing that with this kind of schedule traditional schooling would be virtually impossible, when Cassie was ready to start high school her parents enrolled her in the Ohio Virtual Academy. Now Cassie takes her schoolwork on the road with her. Like all students who use the K¹² curriculum, she can attend class at home, at the gym, in a hotel room—anywhere an Internet connection can be found. "Learning online with K¹² is organized. It’s easy to find the things I need to study and to contact my teachers for help," says Cassie.
Zach and Sam Kennedy—Tennis Players
Handling their first tennis rackets as toddlers. Playing competitive junior tennis at age 5. Helping dad teach tennis to inner-city kids. Competing in doubles and singles junior tennis tournaments. Zach and Sam Kennedy, ages 12 and 11 respectively, are not your typical pre-teen boys.
And they don't attend your typical school. Zach and Sam are enrolled in the Georgia Virtual Academy, a public K¹² partner school. Discovering K¹² "was a godsend," says their dad. "With the K12 curriculum you've got a combination of cutting-edge technology and traditional materials. The books, assessments, and online tools help Sam and Zach stay really interested in what they're learning."
