Sugar Bowl, California: Natural Terrain Parks that Rock
Check out Jabra X-Jam X Games Qualifier
When it comes to Terrain Parks, Sugar Bowl offers something most resorts can't - a natural terrain park that beats the huck out of any man made feature around. In addition to the dedicated terrain park on Mt. Judah, Sugar Bowl is home to the original super pipe - the infamous Silver Belt. Sugar Bowl also boasts the jaw dropping cliffs known as the Palisades, the ridiculously radical volcanic ring that bridges Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Disney. Sugar Bowl has long been known as the free skiers paradise full of gnarly in-bounds steeps and cliffs.
Of course, for those set on tail grabs, switch rodeo 720s and monster rails in the park, there are plenty of sick hits in the Mt. Judah Terrain Park. Each year, Sugar Bowl pushes the envelope a little higher and this year is no exception. With the skills of park designer, Dave Kennedy, the hits are big and the landings smooth. Sugar Bowl's massive 450' super pipe is regularly cut to the FIS sanctioned 18' high walls with a Zaugg transition cutter and a state-of-the-art super cooled snowmaking system blasts the super pipe and the Mt. Judah Terrain Park as soon as mother nature allows so riders can start going big as early as possible.
For some pro action, check out the Jabra X-Jam X Games Qualifier which returns to Sugar Bowl January 13-15, 2006. Sugar Bowl's park builders work for days crafting the wildest X-course around. Spectators love the awesome location in the Mt. Judah Terrain Park that allows for slope side viewing of the crazy action. This event is straight up amazing and should not be missed!
For those just venturing into freestyle, Sugar Bowl offers a complete variety of terrain for all abilities. Two major parks on the Golden Gate and Cold Stream runs, accessible in six minutes on the Mt. Judah Express Quad. You will find quarter pipes, tables, spines and hips for an awesome huckfest in both parks. An intermediate, fun-for-all park on Buena Vista has an extensive array of terrain features. For beginners and children, Sugar Bowl sculpts out a dedicated family park on Nob Hill within eyesight of the Village Lodge deck and rollers will keep the little ones coming back for more on Pine Marten and Harriet's Hollow.
